Custom Sauna Design & Installation
How long does a custom sauna take to build in Marin County?
Most residential projects run four to eight weeks from approved design to first heat cycle, depending on size, materials, and permit timelines. Backyard cabins needing a foundation and outdoor builds take longer; a straightforward indoor conversion can move faster. We give you a real schedule before we start.
Can you build a sauna in a small or unusual space?
Yes — that is exactly where custom shines. We have fit saunas into closets, under stairs, in basement corners, and onto rooftops. After a site visit we will tell you honestly what your space can hold and design the room around it rather than forcing in a stock kit.
Indoor or outdoor — which is better for my home?
Both work beautifully in Marin; it comes down to space and how you want to use it. Indoor saunas are convenient year-round and easy to integrate into a bath or basement. Outdoor cabins create a destination and pair naturally with a cold plunge, garden, or hillside view. We will help you weigh the trade-offs.
Do you handle permits and inspections?
We do. As a licensed general contractor we file through the City of San Rafael or your town’s permit office, coordinate inspections, and build to current electrical, ventilation, and structural code. You should never have to chase paperwork or worry about an install that was not done by the book.
Will the sauna produce real Finnish löyly?
Yes. Proper steam is the whole point, and it depends on engineering most installs skip — sufficient rock mass, correct heater sizing to your room volume, and intake and exhaust vents placed so heat and humidity circulate evenly. We design for that soft, enveloping heat from the start.
Sauna Kit Assembly & Build
Can you assemble a kit I already ordered?
Yes — that is most of what we do. Send us the model and manifest, we confirm it suits your space and service, then receive the shipment, inventory it, and build. If you have not ordered yet, we will help you choose the right kit first.
Will using your crew keep my warranty valid?
It protects it. Manufacturers tie coverage to spec-correct assembly and proper electrical, which is exactly how a licensed builder works. We document the install so a future warranty claim has nothing to push back on.
Do I need a permit for a sauna kit?
Often, yes — especially for a hardwired heater or a structure above a certain size. Requirements vary by town, so we check with the City of San Rafael or your town’s permit office and handle the permitting as part of the job.
How long does assembly take?
Most kits complete in three to seven days on site once all materials arrive, depending on site prep, electrical, and finish. We confirm a timeline after reviewing your kit and space, and we do not start until the shipment is fully inventoried.
Can you handle the electrical and the heater hookup?
Yes. Most sauna heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit, and we coordinate the wiring, hookup, and commissioning as part of the build — then test the heater hot so you know it performs before we leave the site.
Sauna Maintenance & Repair
Do you service saunas you didn't build?
Yes — most of our service work is on saunas built by others, from imported Finnish rooms to off-the-shelf kits. We’ll inspect any brand, diagnose what it needs, and bring it back to safe, reliable working order.
How often should a sauna be serviced?
We recommend a full check once a year, more frequent for outdoor and coastal saunas where Marin’s fog and salt air are hard on wood and vents. Annual wood care and a heater inspection prevent most of the expensive failures.
Can you fix everything in one visit?
Usually. We arrive stocked for common repairs — stones, heater elements, sealants, and refinishing — so most calls finish the same day. Full rebuilds or special-order parts get a scheduled return with a firm scope agreed in advance.
What does the annual maintenance plan include?
A yearly visit covering heater and stone inspection, bench and wood care, vapor-barrier and ventilation checks, and door and seal adjustment — at a predictable rate. It keeps your sauna performing and catches small issues before they turn into repairs.
My heater isn't getting hot enough. Is it worth repairing?
Often, yes. Slow or weak heat usually traces to a worn element, scaled stones, or lost insulation — all repairable. We’ll test the unit, tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense, and explain the cost of each.
Cedar Hot Tub Install
Is a cedar hot tub really better than a regular spa?
It is a different thing. A cedar tub gives you deeper water, natural wood aroma, and a quieter, more elemental soak rather than jets and molded plastic. It asks for a little more care, and rewards it with a warmth and character a manufactured spa cannot match.
Can you build the tub alongside a sauna or cold plunge?
Yes, and we recommend it. When we design the tub, sauna, and plunge together, they share permits, one electrical trench, and a single crew. That lowers your combined cost and gives you a true hot-and-cold contrast ritual in one connected space.
Electric or wood-fired — which should I choose?
Electric is the simplest: set a temperature and step in. Wood-fired offers the ritual of building a fire, independence from the grid, and that signature crackle on a foggy night. We walk you through clearances, heat-up times, and siting so the choice fits how you will actually use it.
How does cedar hold up in Marin's damp coastal climate?
Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant and stable, which is why it has held water for generations. We use tight-grain heartwood, band the staves properly, and specify weather-rated hardware. With the simple care routine we provide, your tub silvers gracefully and lasts for years.
Do I need a permit, and will you handle it?
Most installs involve electrical, and sometimes structural or plumbing permits. As a licensed Class B General Building Contractor, we manage the permitting and inspections for you across Marin County, so the project is done correctly and on the record from the start.
Cold Plunge Installation
How cold will the plunge actually get, and will it stay there?
With a correctly sized chiller, your plunge holds a consistent target between 39 and 55°F, ready whenever you are. You set the temperature you like and it stays there — no ice, no waiting, no daily guesswork.
Do I need a sauna too, or does the plunge stand alone?
Either works. A plunge is a complete recovery tool on its own. Many Marin County clients pair it with a sauna for true Nordic contrast therapy, alternating hot and cold — if that interests you, we design both together so the layout and utilities line up.
How much maintenance does a cold plunge really need?
Far less than an ice routine. Ozone and UV sanitation plus inline filtration keep the water clean with minimal chemistry, so upkeep is mostly periodic checks and occasional water changes. We tune the system and show you exactly what your weekly routine looks like.
Can you install a plunge on a rooftop or inside a finished room?
Yes. We handle outdoor pads and decks, indoor mechanical rooms, and rooftop installs. Each has its own structural, drainage, and noise considerations, which is why we engineer the filtration to run quiet and design the install to suit the specific location.
Are you licensed to do this kind of work?
Yes. Marin Sauna is a licensed California Class B General Building Contractor, insured and bonded. That means we can manage the full scope — framing, waterproofing, electrical coordination, and finish — rather than handing off the parts that matter most.
